According to the findings of a new report, the UK chemical distribution sector looks set to see positive growth over the next 4-5 years despite facing some tough challenges ahead, ranging from REACH and sustainable development to rising oil prices. Chemagility are forecasting the value of the UK chemical distribution market to grow from £2.7Bn (€3.75Bn) in 2007 to £3.65Bn (€5.1Bn) by the end of 2012. Brenntag Group reports record results for 2007, Germany
Brenntag, the global leader in chemical distribution, finished 2007 with record results. With an increase of 9%, the company’s 2007 revenues climbed to EUR 6.7 billion (US$ 9.1 billion). Earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization (operating EBITDA) increased by 14%. Adjusting for currency exchange movements the reported results reveal a picture of the strong underlying growth with sales and operating EBITDA increasing by 13% and 18%, respectively. During 2007, Brenntag completed five acquisitions – St. Lawrence Chemical (Canada), Ulrich Chemical Inc.(USA), Natural World (Italy), Abaci A.S.(Turkey) and Euroresins (UK - It is only Hexion specialties distribution business that has been sold to Albion Chemicals). TER Group strengthens position in the coatings, cosmetics and pharmaceutical industries through the acquisition of Simon & Werner Gmbh, Germany
The Ter Group has recently acquired Simon & Werner Gmbh, a well-known specialty-chemicals distributor based in Germany. Simon & Werner has over 40 employees and had a turnover of around €20M in 2007. Christian Westphal, managing shareholder of the Ter Group sees Simon und Werner as a strategic acquisition to strengthen the company’s position as a pan-European distributor in their focus industries that include coatings, cosmetics and pharmaceuticals. KD Fedderson buys Swedish distributor, Materialdepån, Sweden
KD Fedderson has bought Materialdepån Norden AB of Anderstorp, in Sweden, for an undisclosed sum. The deal covers all of Materialdepån’s employees, its branch offices as well as warehouses in Sweden, Denmark, Finland and Estonia. According to managing director of Hamburg-based Fedderson, Karlheinz Schuster, the move is just the first, “in a series of further strategic expansions.” Established in 1981, Materialdepån has 18 employees and turned over €15m last year from the distribution of polymers from DSM, Evonik and Dyneon as well as equipment from Negri Bossi, Piovan and Bekum. The business will be renamed KD Fedderson Norden. Fedderson’s distribution business generated sales of some €110m last year and the company has already established a subsidiary in Shanghai and gained a presence in France through a 2003 acquisition. BOC a member of the Linde Group purchases Ineos ChlorVinyls’ packed chlorine business, UK
On March 25th. 2008, BOC, a member of the Linde Group, a leading supplier of industrial gases and packaged chemicals announced that it has agreed to purchase Runcorn-based Ineos ChlorVinyls’ packed chlorine business. The sale will be completed once necessary approvals from the Office of Fair Trading have been obtained. The packed chlorine business is a specialist niche market which involves the packaging and delivery of chlorine liquefied gas in drums and cylinders. The acquisition will strengthen BOC’s position in the water treatment sector. BOC Packaged Chemicals division is a value added distributor of a wide range of bulk and cylinder gaseous chemicals into a variety of industry sectors, including water treatment, chemical manufacture, materials science, foam manufacture, aerosol propellants, utilities, and pharmaceutical manufacture.Visit the BOC Special Products website for further information.

 

Azelis Plastics doubles in size, UK
Azelis UK (Chance & Hunt) has acquired the business of Whyte Polymers from the Whyte Group, UK on the 3rd March 2008. Under the agreement Whyte Polymers’ staff will move to Azelis Plastics UK offices at Thatcham, Berkshire and in future the business will operate under the Azelis Plastics UK name. This effectively doubles the size of Azelis Plastics UK giving it a turnover of £20 million and making it one of the major UK polymers distributors. The enlarged Azelis Plastics UK will provide a broader product offer to UK customers requiring engineering and commodity polymers. Go to Chance & Hunt website for more information.

NACD's Responsible Distribution Process having positive effect, USA
New data from a just published US Environmental Protection Agency report show chemical distributors that follow the National Association of Chemical Distributors Responsible Distribution Process are emitting fewer toxic emissions than other chemical distributors. According to the recently released 2006 Toxics Release Inventory Public Data Release Report, the average release of toxic emissions per NACD member facility is the lowest in reporting history at 2,650 lb. The average release per non-NACD facility is 3,275 lb, almost 24% higher than the average release per NACD facility. Christopher Jahn, president of the NACD in Arlington believes the results demonstrate that NACD members have clearly succeeded in improving environmental performance. IMCD on rapid expansion course in Southern Africa, South Africa
IMCD South Africa, subsidiary of IMCD Group, acquired all activities of Siloxane, a distribution company based in Johannesburg, South Africa. Siloxane is active in the plastics- and polymerisation industry and represents Wacker Chemie, one of IMCD’s major principals in Europe. The business will be integrated on April, 1st 2008 into IMCD South Africa. With this acquisition IMCD South Africa is well established in Coatings, Plastics, Lubricants and Life Science (Food, Pharma, Personal Care). Union Pertochemical in joint-venture agreement with ExxonMobil, Thailand
According to the Bangkok Post, Union Petrochemical (UP), Thailand's largest chemical distributor, is close to signing a joint-venture agreement with ExxonMobil. Union Chemical currently distributes around 60,000 tonnes of solvents per annum and is one of the leading importers and distributors of solvents and chemicals in Thailand handlng products such as alcohols, aliphalics, aromatics, esters, glycols, ketones and monomers. Nordmann, Rassmann GmbH have a new Managing Director
Nordmann, Rassmann GmbH (NRC) have announced that Gabriele Henke (56) became Managing Director of Nordmann, Rassmann GmbH on the 1st April 2008 taking over from Wolfgang Nagel. At the same time Dr. Ulla Seidel-Wiese (48) will take over Gabriele Henke’s previous position within the company managing the Cosmetics, Pharmaceuticals as well as Food Additives and Raw Materials Business Units. Wolfgang Nagel (59) will withdraw from management of NRC as of June 30, 2008 and will become a member of the Managing Board of Georg Nordmann Holding Aktiengesellschaft. Edgar E. NACD appoints new VP of marketing and member programs
The US National Association of Chemical Distributors (NACD) has appointed Lucinda A Schofer as its new vice-president, marketing and member programs. Schofer, who has worked for the American Chemistry Council for the past 16 years, will now be responsible for, among other things, the daily operation of the Member Programs Department, which handles the majority of dues and non-dues revenue generating member programmes and services, including membership/affiliate programmes, strategic partnership programmes and the Association's major conferences. www.nacd.com

 

Brenntag North America, Inc. names New President of Brenntag Southwest
Mr. William A. Fidler, President of Brenntag North America, Inc., one of the leading chemical distributors in North America, has announced the promotion of Mr. Tom Corcoran to President of Brenntag Southwest, with headquarters in Lancaster, TX. Mr. Corcoran was most recently Vice President of Sales and Sourcing for Brenntag North America, Inc.
