Chemical Business Association launched, September 2006
The British Chemical Distributors and Traders Association (BCDTA)
renamed to reflect fundamental changes to the industry.
The new association for the UK chemical supply chain - the Chemical Business Association (CBA) - was launched on the 1st September 2006.
The CBA is the new name for the British Chemical Distributors and Traders Association (BCDTA) whose member companies voted overwhelmingly in favour of the name change at their Annual General Meeting in April 2006.
CBA Chairman, Ken Gilkes, Stort Chemicals said, "BCDTA was formed more than eighty years ago when the chemical industry was in its infancy. Our new name recognises some of the fundamental changes that have taken place in the industry over recent years - and their implications for the chemical supply chain."
"Many of our members now provide services extending far beyond the traditional distribution function such as manufacturing, blending, formulating, just-in-time deliveries, marketing and technical support. Our new name reflects the diversity of these activities," he added.
The re-branding is the culmination of a two-year strategy review which examined every aspect of the Association's operations and created a framework for its future growth and development.
The review identified representation and services as the two main engines of growth for the CBA. It also focused on the Association's role in promoting higher standards to help the chemical supply chain to move beyond simple regulatory compliance.
"We believe the CBA's future lies in effective representation of our members' interests in a UK and European context as well as the promotion of higher industry standards, particularly for smaller firms (SMEs). SMEs will also benefit from the further development of CBA's added-value services designed to minimise their costs of regulatory compliance," said Ken Gilkes.
About the activities of the CBA
The Chemical Business Association is the central source of business knowledge on the UK's chemical supply chain and offers the latest information and briefings on key industry issues - changes in legislation, REACH, Responsible Care, networking and access to full time technical expertise.
Each year CBA members distribute more than 2.5 million tonnes of chemicals with a market value of almost three billion euros. CBA members, the majority of which are SMEs, are a vital interface with thousands of UK downstream chemical users. CBA is a member of the FECC - the Brussels-based organisation representing European chemical distributors.
